Top towns and villages to visit in Northumberland

Northumberland is home to some of the most picturesque and quaint villages and towns that the UK has to offer. You will find a excellent selection of historic market towns with quirky shops and boutiques for you to visit, fishing ports dotting the coastline where you can sample local seafood and rugged villages in Hadrian’s wall country.
Here is our guide to three of the best villages and towns to visit while staying on your Northumberland Cottage holiday.

Berwick upon tweed
This is one of the most Northerly towns in Northumberland, situated along the Scottish border. One of the great ways to take in the history of the town is to walk around the Elizabethan fortifications that circle Berwick upon tweed. Here you will get amazing views of the coastline and the river tweed.
The town itself is home to a great arts and cultural scene, with museums and galleries that show off the talent and the history from the area.

Alnwick
Country Life magazine voted Alnwick the best place to live in Britain and is well known for its shopping, farmers markets and lively events. Two attractions in the town are the Alnwick Garden and Alnwick Castle, but the castle has become a lot more famous in recent times. Movie goers and book fans will recognise it as the setting of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. No doubt visitor numbers have greatly increased thanks to the films and books success.
The town also boasts one of Europe’s biggest second hand book shops called Barter Books. I’m sure they will have plenty of copies of Harry Potter for you to catch up on if you have been inspired by the Hogwarts castle

Morpeth
In the middle of Northumberland, we have the pretty market town of Morpeth, situated along the Wansbeck river and has features wooded valleys and winding country roads surrounding it. The town itself is great for shopping and has great events held during the summer in Carlisle Park. Like many of Northumberland’s small villages and towns, Morpeth has great farmers markets that are held in the town’s market area which has a historic clock tower overlooking it. Why not visit Morpeth to sample some of the regions best produce.

This is obviously only a small selection of the what Northumberland has to offer, so next time you are on a Northumberland Holiday why not visit one of our recommend villages or go out and find some of the other Northumbrian hidden gems tucked away in the region.
